Housing starts dipped 14.4% month-over-month in May, down to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.55 million. Following several months of declines, housing starts have finally stabilized to pre-pandemic levels. Building permits fell 7% month-over-month down to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.70 million, they are still higher than their pre-pandemic levels.

The Federal Reserve strengthened its fight against inflation today by raising the benchmark interest rate 0.75%. This brings the Federal Funds Rate to a range of 1.5% to 1.75%. Though the 75-basis-point hike is higher than Fed Chair Jerome Powell previously suggested, it is hopeful to make more of an impact on the current pace of inflation.
