"October. This is one of the particularly dangerous months to speculate in stocks. The others are July, January, September, April, November, May, March, June, December, August, and February.” That market sentiment appears in the 1894 novel Pudd'nhead Wilson, written by Mark Twain. But behind the sarcasm is a kernel of truth.

September and October have historically been challenging stretches of the calendar for stocks. The pattern is consistent enough that it has its own name: the September Effect. No one fully agrees on why. Some attribute it to institutional investors making portfolio changes before their fiscal year ends. Others point to the return of active trading after the slower summer months.

What matters more than the cause is how you respond to it. Short-term volatility is part of investing.
