CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR WINNER!
A member of our Spring Hill community just became $10.75 million richer. The winning Florida Lotto ticket from the September 19th drawing was sold right here at the Publix on Commercial Way, and whoever holds that ticket likely just had their life change overnight.
Before the celebration spending starts and family members you’ve never met start appearing out of nowhere, a few things worth knowing:
1. The IRS treats lottery winnings as ordinary income. While Florida has no state income tax, federal income tax will be due. The Florida Lottery withholds 24% in federal tax, but a jackpot this size pushes the winner into the top 37% bracket. More will likely be owed at tax time, do not assume the initial withholding covers your full tax bill.
2. Taking the lump sum, or taking the annuity? Taking the lump sum option means a lower payout amount (estimated $5.4 million) is taxed in a single year. The annuity spreads the income, and the tax bill, across decades. This can be beneficial for avoiding higher tax brackets than necessary (30 annual payments of $358,333).
However, you may be able to outperform the rate of return of the annuity by taking the lump sum and investing the money with a plan designed to meet your goals. (Lump sum invested in 3.5% municipal bonds can provide $119,070 in tax-free income annually, or an average allocation to stocks and bonds could provide $204,120 annually with a bit more tax to pay—and the money is yours to keep, use, or pass on even after 30 years with no withdrawal restrictions.)
3. A sobering statistic: according to data frequently cited from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, nearly one-third (Approximately 33%) of lottery winners eventually declare bankruptcy. This money could provide for you and your family to live comfortably for generations, but only if managed prudently.
If you or a loved one has had lady luck smile upon you, and you'd like help understanding the tax implications or putting a plan in place so this money works for your benefit for years to come, our office is right here in Spring Hill.
