Mr. Surachet is a 60-year-old organic rice farmer from Thailand. He has lived his life on a rice farm ever since he was born. He only has one son, and he lives with him.

He started practicing organic rice farming 23 years ago and his family helps each other to farm their 10.2-acre farmland together. He can only grow one crop of rice a year owing to the poor condition of the soil and an inefficient irrigation system in his area. So he has to find a way to improve his farmland in this coming season to get a higher rice yield.

Mr. Surachet is in need of a loan to purchase cows because he hopes to get a lot of manure from the cows. He wants to use more organic fertilizer to improve the health of his soil and generate a higher rice yield, with a goal of producing up to 12 tons in total. He strongly believes that organic farming not only provides him with income, but also creates amicable living conditions for every creature in the area around his organic farm.

Sophal, 38 years old, is representing her group of five members in Kampong Chhnang province, Cambodia. She is married and has five children, aged 1 to 18 years. For the past eighteen years, Sophal has been raising pigs to earn income to support the family, while her husband has been working in the transportation service to aid the family income. The couple typically makes around 15USD per day.

Sophal would like to use her share of this loan to purchase a tractor for her husband’s business. She sees that this investment will allow her to increase her family profits. In the future, Sophal wishes to enlarge her farm, to build a ground floor room, and to support her children to get higher education.

In this group: Bunthea, Sophal
