Summer changes everything on the road. Your policy probably hasn't noticed.

Construction zones everywhere. Traffic backed up on routes that were wide open in March. Heat pushing equipment harder than it ran all winter.

Your renewal was in January. A lot has changed since then.

If your operation looks different right now than it did at renewal: more miles, different routes, drivers running longer days, it's worth a quick conversation. Not a sales pitch. Just a look.

Umbrella coverage works like this: when you buy it, you probably won't need it. But by the time you need it, you can't buy it in time to save the load.

Brokers are starting to ask for higher limits on certain freight. $2M. $3M. $5M. Hazmat, high-value cargo, anything with serious loss potential. If a broker asks and you don't have it, you're not getting that load. If you wait until next renewal to add it, you've spent six months losing freight to fleets that already had it lined up.

Pull your declarations page. Look at your primary liability limit. Look at whether there's an umbrella behind it. If there isn't, that's a gap worth solving now.

Every delay costs you time. Some of them cost you a lot more than that.

Traffic backs up. A load runs late. You eat the time and move on. Most fleet owners do.

But here's the thing nobody talks about: a delay that turns into a missed delivery dispute, a cargo claim, or a driver stuck on the shoulder in a non-trucking situation can expose a gap in your policy you didn't know was there.

You plan your routes. When did you last actually review your coverage?

The claim didn't fail because something went wrong on the road.

It failed because something was wrong on page 3 of the policy.

Wrong radius. Unscheduled driver. Cargo type not listed. These are the details that don't show up until you need them to work, and by then it's too late to fix them.

Most renewals go out without a single conversation. The number goes up, the broker hits send, and the policy rolls over with the same gaps it had last year.

Three things worth checking right now:
1. Operating radius: if your real lanes run wider than what's listed, your coverage may stop at a line on a map you didn't know existed.
2. Driver schedule: every driver who touches that truck needs to be on the policy. Every one.
3. Cargo classification: general cargo endorsements aren't always as broad as they read.

Not sure what you've got? We'll read through it with you. No pitch, no pressure. Just an honest look at what your policy actually says.

You didn't get a new violation. You didn't crash. You didn't swap out a driver.

But a Supreme Court ruling may still change whether brokers put freight on your trucks.

Here's the short version: brokers now have more reason to defend every carrier decision they make. That means they're looking harder at public safety records before they assign a load.

CSA score. Inspection history. Crash data. Anything on your FMCSA profile that raises a question is now a question someone has to answer before they call you.

Clean fleets become easy decisions. Questionable fleets become harder conversations.

New video breaks down what changed, why umbrella coverage just stopped being optional, and three moves to make in the next 60 days before requirements catch up to your renewal.

Fleet owners: your CSA score used to be a compliance problem. Now it's a sales problem.

Brokers aren't just matching freight to trucks. They're managing legal exposure. Every load they assign is something they have to defend. That means they're vetting files harder than they used to. Conditional safety ratings, repeated out-of-service events, stacked crashes — any one of those might not cost you a load. All three together creates exactly the kind of questions brokers avoid.

Here's the part most people miss: even if you don't get worse, your position can still shift. If every other fleet is cleaning up their record and yours stays flat, your relative standing changes. The baseline moves whether you move with it or not.

The fleets coming out ahead right now aren't posting about their great safety culture. They just have boring files. Clean inspections. Solid documentation. No drama.

The road teaches patience faster than anything else.

Most operators learn that the hard way: sitting with a blown tire at mile marker 300, or waiting on a load that's three hours late, or nursing a rig through weather that should've turned you back an hour earlier.

That patience is worth something. It's what keeps you running when other guys fold.
But patience doesn't close a coverage gap. It doesn't explain what happened to your rate at renewal. It doesn't tell you whether your cargo limit still makes sense for the loads you're running now.

If your broker hasn't called you in the last year to ask how your operation changed, they're not doing their job. We do.

No traffic. No delays. Smooth delivery.

Every driver has had one of those days. The ones where everything clicks and you almost forget what the job usually feels like.

Enjoy it.

And when the other kind of day shows up, the one where something goes sideways and you're filing a claim at 11pm, that's when your coverage either works or it doesn't.

We write trucking policies that hold up on the hard days, not just the easy ones. Request a coverage review: https://www.valleytruckinginsurance.com/

The operators who are still running ten years from now aren't the luckiest ones in the room.

They're the most consistent.

Same pre-trip. Same standards. Same discipline, load after load.

But most of them apply that consistency to everything except their insurance.
Same policy. Same carrier. Same renewal letter showing up every year without a single conversation about whether it still fits.

Your operation isn't the same as it was three years ago. Your coverage should reflect that.
When's the last time someone actually looked at your policy with you?

If you can't answer that quickly, that's worth fixing. Request a coverage review at the link below.

More mirror strikes. More yard damage. More "minor" repairs. Most fleet owners file those under "cost of doing business."

They shouldn't.

Those are early warnings. And workers' comp is the claim category that catches fleets completely off guard because it doesn't need a crash. Slips, falls, fatigue, poor cab entry. It rises when schedules get rushed and training gets skipped.

We put together a short on the 3 signs your fleet is drifting toward claims before a big one hits. The full breakdown is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lf_p-IldMs
