CONSERVATION POSTER CONTEST REGIONAL WINNER

Amelia Gloyd, Division 4, (grades 7 & 8), was selected as Regional Winner of the 2026 Conservation District of Iowa Poster Contest. Amelia is a student at Iowa Great Lakes Lutheran School in Spencer. The poster theme was “Soil – Where it all Begins”. The annual art contest is co-sponsored by the Clay County Soil & Water Conservation District, The Conservation Districts of Iowa and Green Cover Seed.

Congratulations to Clay County Century Farm Recipient Judy Phillips along with her children Ryan, Melanie & Deb. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Mike Naig and Iowa Farm Bureau Federation President Brent Johnson honored 274 farm families with Century Farm designations during ceremonies at the 2026 Iowa State Fair. The Century Farm Program has a special connection to America’s milestone celebrations. The program was established by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and Iowa Farm Bureau Federation in 1976 as part of the Nation’s Bicentennial Celebration. Fifty years later, Iowa is once again celebrating a major American milestone while recognizing the farm families whose dedication and perseverance have helped shape the state and nation.

🐄 Last week was 5th grade Ag Field Days at Jones Dairy. Over 400 students from multiple counties attended. It was a great week, and we received lots of positive comments.

Congratulations to Neil and Sandy Krummen of Clay County for receiving the 2026 Iowa Environmental Leader Award. They were nominated by the Clay County Soil & Water Conservation District.
Neil and Sandy Krummen operate a diversified crop and livestock farm raising sheep, goats and hogs along with corn, soybeans, rye, oats and buckwheat.
Their diverse rotation and cover crops help keep living roots and cover on the ground, while managed grazing prevents overgrazing and livestock manure is used to recycle nutrients.
Neil serves on the Iowa Soybean Association Board and Northwest Iowa Agriculture Stewardship Alliance Board and has helped host Practical Farmers of Iowa field days highlighting diverse rotations and cover crops.

🌾 Taking Iowa Agriculture to Washington, D.C.!

Five area farmers, including Clay County Farm Bureau Board member, Anthony Myers of Spencer, along with Greg Haberl of Carroll, Jamie Stoulil of Manson, Meghan Jones of Sioux Center, and Ben Kolbe of Sac City, recently joined fellow Iowa Farm Bureau members in Washington, D.C., to advocate for policies that support farmers, family farms, and rural communities.

During the trip, members met with lawmakers and agency representatives to discuss the urgent need for an updated Farm Bill, stronger risk management tools for farmers, expanded trade opportunities, and protections for interstate commerce.

The visit was also the capstone experience for participants in Iowa Farm Bureau's Ag Leaders Institute, a program that develops informed, engaged leaders for the future of agriculture. Thank you to these dedicated members for being strong voices for Iowa agriculture! 🇺🇸

🍂🌾 Harvest Season is Almost Here! 🚜🌽

As fall approaches, so does harvest season, and that means more farm equipment on our roads. While traveling with large agricultural machinery can be challenging, staying safe is a shared responsibility for both farmers and motorists.

✅ Road Safety Tips During Harvest Season: 🚜 Make smart decisions – Follow all traffic laws and remember, it is illegal to pass in a no-passing zone, even when behind slow-moving farm equipment.

🚜 Stay alert and patient – Farm machinery often travels under 25 mph. Be prepared to encounter equipment on rural roads and only pass when it is legal and safe to do so.

🚜 Watch for unexpected turns – Farmers may need to make wide left turns into field entrances. Be aware of lighting, markings, and signals that indicate equipment may be turning.

🚜 Leave plenty of space – Large farm equipment requires much longer stopping distances. Cutting in front of machinery near intersections can create dangerous situations.

🚜 Remember blind spots – Just because you can see the operator doesn't mean they can see you. Farm equipment has significant blind spots, so give it room.
