Amy Forette, coordinator of Ag In The Classroom did the Peterson Library afterschool program – Iowa Garden Day!
They celebrated Iowa Garden week by reading the story, ‘Tops and Bottoms’ by Janet Stevens which is about a clever Hare that works with a Bear, letting Bear choose “tops” or “bottoms” of the crops. Each time, Hare plants vegetables that make Bear’s choice worthless while Hare keeps the good parts. After being tricked three times, Bear finally decides to work his own field. Children had a chance to taste different veggies including spinach, cucumbers, cauliflower, celery, and carrots, the tops and bottoms. They also did Garden Yoga, dug for worms with trowels, and used magnifying glasses to get a closer look at them.
While snacking, they played Veggie Bingo and then planted the flower bed under the library sign with zinnias and marigolds — including a few flowers the kids had grown from seed themselves!

Today, Governor Kim Reynolds signed SF 2219 into law, ensuring students can participate in school-sponsored activities like FFA without being penalized for absences. A big win for the next generation of agricultural leaders in Iowa!

This ICA-backed legislation supports experiential learning opportunities that help shape future leaders in agriculture through hands-on education, leadership development, and career exploration.

Thank you to Governor Reynolds and the legislators who helped get this bill across the finish line and continue supporting the future of Iowa agriculture!
