If you spend enough time around successful business owners in Southlake, Westlake, or other affluent Dallas-Fort Worth communities, you will eventually hear about an investment opportunity that sounds almost too good to pass up.

Maybe it's a commercial real estate development, a private lending fund, an oil and gas partnership, or a stake in a promising business. Someone you know has already invested, the projected returns look attractive, and there may only be a few spots remaining.

These opportunities often come through trusted relationships. A business partner, longtime friend, or fellow country-club member introduces the deal. That personal connection can make the opportunity feel more credible than something presented by a stranger.

But knowing the person presenting an investment is not the same as understanding the investment itself...read more

A direct-indexing proposal usually arrives with an impressive number attached. "We harvested 5% in losses last year." "This strategy can add 1% to 2% in after-tax return." For a seven-figure taxable account, that is hard to ignore.

But a harvested loss is not a return, and a tax deduction today is not always a tax saved forever. So when clients ask us "is direct indexing worth it," we reframe the question: after the extra fees, the fading harvest, and the taxes you may owe on the way out, will you end up with more money than you would in a low-cost index ETF?

For some investors, the answer is clearly yes. For many others, the math is...read more

A woman in Grapevine loses her husband of 31 years. Within a week, someone tells her to "just call Social Security." Within a month, someone else tells her to take the survivor benefit right away because she's entitled to it. Neither piece of advice is quite right, and the gap between them can be worth tens of thousands of dollars over a retirement.

Here is the short answer to the question most people searching this topic are asking. As a widow or widower, you can usually choose between your survivor benefit and your own retirement benefit, and you can often take one first and switch to the other later. Social Security says it plainly: "The payments won't be added together," but...read more

If you own a home in Southlake, Colleyville, Grapevine, Keller, or Westlake, the property tax bill is probably one of the biggest checks you write each year. Turning 65 is the moment Texas starts giving some of it back. Some of it can arrive on its own, but not all of it, and plenty of homeowners wait years to ask.

Three separate benefits kick in at 65. One lowers the value your school district taxes. One stops the school tax bill from growing. One lets you postpone paying altogether. They work differently, and you can use all three...read more

Every fall, millions of retirees look forward to an announcement that can affect their household budgets for the year ahead: Social Security’s annual cost-of-living adjustment, commonly known as the COLA. The adjustment is designed to help benefits keep pace with inflation, but the percentage increase announced in the headlines does not always translate into as much additional spending money as retirees might expect.

For retirees planning their 2027 finances, understanding the Social Security COLA is about more than knowing how much benefits will increase. It is about understanding how...read more

U.S. stocks inched higher in the third quarter and finished near record highs, while bonds and real estate lost ground. Investors stayed focused on artificial intelligence, record corporate profits and a resilient U.S. economy, and they looked past higher oil prices and plenty of uncertainty around the world.

That strength comes with a price. Many of the large growth companies that have driven returns for years now trade at some of the highest valuations we have ever seen. Investors own more stocks than ever, fund managers hold very little cash and margin debt sits near record levels. Markets can keep climbing, but the more you pay today, the harder it becomes to earn the same returns over the next five to ten years.

Meanwhile, high-quality bonds pay yields we have not seen in decades. That raises a fair question: Is now a good time to take a few chips off the table and add a little more defense?

In this quarter’s letter, Mike uses a little Texas history, the Barnett Shale boom and bust, to explain why the AI build-out may follow a familiar cycle and why now is a good time to confirm your portfolio still fits your goals. We also cover year-end tax moves under the new rules and introduce our new office manager, Sammi.

If your estate is worth less than $15 million, you might assume estate planning has become a nonissue. For most families, federal estate taxes probably are not the primary concern, but that does not mean you no longer need an estate plan.

In 2026, the federal estate tax basic exclusion amount is $15 million per individual, up from $13.99 million in 2025. For a married couple, proper planning can potentially allow both spouses' exemptions to be used, which means federal estate tax affects a relatively small percentage of American families.

Texas adds another advantage. Texas does not currently impose its own estate or inheritance tax, and Texas voters approved a constitutional amendment in 2025 prohibiting the state from imposing most death, inheritance, and similar transfer taxes.

That sounds like great news, and it is. But...read more

The third quarter of 2026 delivered mixed results across the major markets. The U.S. stock market led the major equity markets with a 1.41% gain, followed by International Developed markets at 0.89%. Emerging Markets declined slightly by 0.37%, while Global Real Estate experienced a larger decline of 6.03%. Fixed income markets also faced headwinds, with the U.S. Bond market declining 3.51% and Global Bonds (ex-U.S.) falling 1.79%.

Despite the weakness during the quarter, the longer-term picture remains positive. U.S., International Developed, and Emerging Markets stocks have all generated positive returns over the past 1, 5, and 10 years. Global Real Estate has also produced positive returns across each of those periods. Global Bonds (ex-U.S.) have delivered positive returns over the 1-, 5-, and 10-year periods, while U.S. Bonds have been positive over the 10-year period despite recent declines...read more

Most owners who ask “what's my business worth” have already answered themselves with a rule of thumb. Someone at a networking event said businesses sell for two times revenue. A competitor sold for four times earnings, so that must be the number. The math feels solid because it's simple. It's also the fastest way to walk into a buyer conversation with a price nobody on the other side of the table will accept.

Buyers don't value your business off a multiple you heard once. They value it off a specific earnings number, calculated a specific way, then apply a multiple that reflects your industry, your size, and how much of the business depends on you personally. Getting the earnings number right is most of the work. Getting it wrong is how deals fall apart in due diligence, months after...read more

If you’ve recently retired, you may be sitting in the lowest tax brackets you’ll see for the rest of your life. The paychecks have stopped. Social Security may not have started. Required withdrawals from your IRA are still years away. For a lot of DFW retirees, that stretch is the best chance they’ll ever get to move money out of a pre-tax account at a discount.

A Roth conversion is how you do it. And the last three months of the year are when you can do it with the most information and the fewest surprises. The question we hear most isn’t whether to convert. It’s how much, and the answer usually comes down to a few income lines you can see on a page...read more
