Diaper Need
The Junior League of Champlain Valley has established Vermont’s first diaper bank and began distributing diapers to area food shelves from its South Burlington headquarters in Fall 2018. The Diaper Bank will partner with The Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf and town food shelf programs in Williston, Richmond, Milton and Hinesburg and plans to distribute close to 100,000 diapers annually. “Diaper need” impacts one in three U.S. families, and the well-being of our country’s infants and toddlers.
In 2018 the Junior League of Champlain Valley operated a diaper drive as a test run for launching a diaper bank. Over 18,000 diapers were gathered and distributed to the Chittenden Emergency Food Shelf, which reported that 6-10 people per day request diapers. It can cost over $100 per month to diaper a child, and no state or federal safety-net program allocates dollars specifically for the purchase of diapers; in fact, many prevent spending money on them.
The Junior League Diaper Bank’s initial inventory was boosted by a large donation from Seventh Generation of Burlington. Seventh Generation has donated an extraordinary 46,000 diapers to the Junior League’s Diaper Bank. “We are incredibly grateful to Seventh Generation for their tremendous donation, and proud to be part of a community where businesses support causes like the Diaper Bank,” said Amanda Herzberger, chair of the diaper bank committee.
