“If you can show somebody how to be wrong in a genuine way, they will look to you when they need someone to be right.”- Steven Cochran

Today we had the privilege of hearing Steven Cochran speak at the Network One quarterly luncheon here on the Northshore at the lovely St. August Maison.

This talk/presentation had substance worth ruminating over.

His challenge was simple: when a conversation goes wrong, a leader has to be willing to stop asking, “What was wrong with THEM?” and instead ask:
“How was I wrong?”

Steven gave us four places to look:

THE MESSAGE — Was I actually correct?
THE DELIVERY — How did I communicate it?
THE RECEPTION — Was I really listening?
THE ASSUMPTIONS — What did I assume that I didn't actually know?

And then he took it one step further. Once you figure out your part, go back to the person and own it. No excuses. No “I'm sorry, but…” No immediately pointing out what they did wrong.

That takes confidence. It takes humility. And it builds trust.

That's leadership advice worth remembering.
