I've noticed a clear pattern in the people who thrive in retirement versus the ones who quietly struggle.
It almost never comes down to the numbers.
The people who struggle tend to have one thing in common: they get to retirement and realize their entire community was tied to work. The colleagues, the structure, the purpose of showing up somewhere every day… it's all gone at once. And they were never intentional about building anything outside of it.
The people who thrive? They're engaged. They have somewhere to be. People counting on them. A coffee group, a volunteer commitment, a fitness routine, a faith community: something that gives the week a shape.
Here's the thing: you can't manufacture that overnight. Community takes time to build. Which means the best time to start is before you need it.
If you're in your 50s or 60s and your social world lives mostly inside the office, this episode is worth your hour.
