On June 19, 1865, more than 250,000 enslaved people of color in the state of Texas were freed by Executive decree, following the end of the Civil War. This momentous day came to be known as "Juneteenth," or "Emancipation Day," "Freedom Day," and "Juneteenth Independence Day," which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Today, is recognized as a day of celebration, and in 2021 was signed into law as a federal holiday.
