Burst pipes from freezing temps are one of the most common sources of home water damage claims. The good news? Most are preventable with a few simple steps. Here’s how to protect your home (and help avoid surprises on your policy):
• Keep your thermostat set to at least 55°F (ideally 60–65°F) day and night—even when you’re away. Never turn off the heat completely!
• Insulate exposed pipes in unheated areas like basements, attics, garages, and exterior walls. Use foam sleeves or UL-listed heat tape for extra protection.
• Let faucets drip slowly (especially on exterior walls) during extreme cold to keep water moving.
• Open cabinet doors under sinks and vanities to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.
• Seal cracks/leaks around windows, doors, vents, and where pipes enter the home to block cold drafts.
• Drain and shut off outdoor faucets/hoses, and consider frost-proof spigots.
Taking these precautions not only safeguards your property but also demonstrates responsible maintenance—key for coverage in the event of a claim.
