Two companion reports are now available to help stakeholders better understand financial education policy across all 50 states.

The National Policy Analysis provides the full methodological foundation, including evaluation criteria, scoring definitions, evidence, and policy recommendations used to assess whether financial education meets the minimum standards applied to core academic subjects.

The State-by-State Comparison report presents standardized profiles for each state, including overall ranking, standards alignment score, classification, and performance across 12 evaluation criteria. This format makes it easy to benchmark progress, communicate findings, and support informed decision-making.

Together, these reports provide both the detailed analysis and the practical comparison tools needed to understand how financial education policy aligns with core academic expectations.

The education system ignores best practices in curriculum priorities.

For more than a century, the American high school curriculum has centered on the same five academic disciplines: science, mathematics, English, social studies, and foreign language. While these subjects provide important academic foundations, the structure of the curriculum has changed very little despite dramatic shifts in economic realities, workforce demands, and the financial responsibilities people face in adulthood.

Modern education research consistently shows that effective curriculum design should:
• align education with real-life outcomes
• prioritize practical and transferable skills
• reflect the needs and goals of learners
• evolve based on feedback from students and graduates

Financial education supports each of these principles.

Every student will earn income, pay expenses, manage credit, and make financial decisions throughout their lives. These decisions influence housing stability, career opportunities, entrepreneurship, healthcare access, and long-term financial security.

Yet despite its universal relevance, financial education is still treated as a secondary subject in many schools.

Research from the National Academies of Sciences emphasizes that modern education systems should focus on competencies students can apply across real-world situations, including decision-making, problem solving, and responsible resource management.

Financial capability develops exactly these skills.

Preparing students for life after graduation requires more than traditional academic instruction. Students must also learn how to evaluate financial decisions, manage risk, and navigate the economic systems that shape their opportunities.

If education systems are serious about preparing students for adulthood, financial education should be taught with the same rigor, standards, and instructional priority as other core subjects.

It's time for our education system to Make Financial Education a Core Subject.

Strong financial literacy standards are the foundation of effective financial education.

Without clear, high-quality standards, students receive inconsistent or incomplete money education – leaving them unprepared for real life.

The right standards ensure that every student learns essential skills that support qualified and confident financial decision-making.

That’s why we developed comprehensive, practical Financial Literacy Standards designed to deliver consistent, high-impact results.

Transparency drives accountability.

It is time we examine whether financial education is governed with the same rigor, structure, and support as core academic subjects.

Our national policy analysis evaluates financial education standards across all 50 states using the same baseline expectations applied to required disciplines like math, science, and English. The findings establish a clear starting point for strengthening standards and improving student outcomes.

Review the analysis and help advance the effort to make financial education a core subject.
