⚠️FRAUD TIP TUESDAY⚠️

You may have heard of the scams involving your family members’ voice being impersonated. In this scam, your family member calls and tells you they have been arrested and they need money immediately to be released. They push a sense of urgency that could make you panic and not think straight.

But, beware! The voice you are hearing is fake. Criminals can find videos of your loved one online and use AI to replicate their voice. They use urgency and emotion to manipulate you into acting quickly. They may ask for the money using methods such as gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency. These are all hard to track and almost impossible to recover.

If you receive a phone call like this, stop and think before acting. Hang up and try to contact your family member directly. Never send money to anyone you don’t know.

Don’t let scammers ruin your vacation! Even when booking with a reputable site, scammers can still take advantage of you and your vacation. Reports have been made of criminals posting fake vacation listings on websites such as Airbnb, VRBO, and Homestay. Many times, they will steal photos from legitimate listings to make their fake listings seem real.

So, how does the scam work? The criminals will request a down payment at the time of the booking. Once they have your money, they may cancel your booking at the last minute, or when you arrive at your rental you will find that the place is already occupied or doesn’t exist at all.

➡️Only book through legitimate websites that offer fraud protection and secure payments.
➡️Take steps to ensure that the property actually exists. Look up the address in a map service or, if you know someone who lives in the area, have them check out the address for you.
➡️Do a search of the property before booking. If you find multiple listings with different contact names, that could be a red flag.
➡️Only pay through the reputable booking website. Don’t send cash, personal check, wire transfer, or moneygram.

Be aware of this recent scam involving criminals impersonating a Financial Institution and the FDIC. In this scam, criminals are able to spoof their phone number to make it look like a phone call is coming from a Financial Institution. They may tell you that your account is compromised and they need you to transfer money to a “secure account” in order to get your money back. To increase urgency, they may even say they need to get the FDIC involved.

Here are a few things to keep in mind regarding the FDIC:

⚠️The FDIC does not protect against fraud or theft
⚠️Neither the FDIC nor your Financial Institution will ask to gain access to your internet banking
⚠️You can confirm that your bank is insured with the FDIC by using the BankFind tool
⚠️If you think you have been a victim of an FDIC scam, report the scam to your Financial Institution, the FDIC, FTC, and your local police
