Have you ever found yourself viewing certain sources of income as free money? Mental accounting bias is a common behavioral trap that leads individuals to compartmentalize their money into separate mental accounts based on arbitrary criteria, such as the source of the funds or their intended use. While this may seem harmless, it can result in irrational financial decisions and missed opportunities for wealth accumulation.

For example, individuals might treat windfall gains differently from their regular income, allocating windfalls to discretionary spending rather than saving or investing them wisely. Similarly, people might justify spending more on luxury items with money from a bonus or inheritance, rather than considering the overall impact on their financial well-being.

To overcome mental accounting bias, it's essential to adopt a holistic approach to financial management and view all income and assets as part of a unified whole.
