It's well known that our mental faculties decline a bit as we age, like becoming more forgetful or easily distracted. That's why you should receive a cognitive screening each year. Luckily, it's covered by Medicare.

One of the biggest reasons people don't eat healthier is the cost. It's possible to stick to a budget while eating healthier, though! Here's how.

MEDICARE 101 - Turning 65

First step for MEDICARE COVERAGE at 65

Medicare is health insurance for people 65 or older. You’re first eligible to sign up for Medicare 3 months before you turn 65. You’ll sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B through Social Security (SS). Visit ssa.gov (the quickest and easiest way) or call 1-800-772-1213 or sign up in person at a SS office near you. Here’s where you will apply to start getting benefits from SS (or the Railroad Retirement Board). Once you’re approved to start getting benefits, you’ll automatically get Part A coverage. You’ll choose if you want Part B coverage when you apply for benefits. In order to have Medicare you must sign up for Part B. Once you sign up (or are approved for benefits), you’ll get notified by mail with your Medicare card (30+ days).

Now you have Medicare parts A & B effective the first day of birthday month. Part A is hospital. Part B is medical Both A & B cover 80% of Medicare covered services (hospital and medical).

FYI - Medicare Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is seven months surrounding your birthday (three months before 65th birthday, birthday month, three months after birthday month) and is the first opportunity to acquire Medicare. This is a very important window for your healthcare so please be aware.

Contact me when you receive your Medicare card. Next is a decision to have Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage to cover the remaining 20% of Medicare covered services.

When you visit these sites there is an option that lets you enroll in some plans. It is highly recommended having a conversation with me before you enroll yourself although it is not required. We can zoom, text, email, talk etc.

This link takes you to a page that’s quite interesting. It’s a blog for seniors. Topics include health, lifestyle, Medicare and diet. You will be prompted to sign up for their newsletter. It’s up to you. You can always access the articles through my link which update
regularly.

To get to the Medicare plan details there is a button that says ‘see plans’. What plans you can sign up for depends on zip code so put it in when you get there. On your phone please click on the Medicare button and scroll all the way down to find the ‘see plans’
button. Displays differently on a computer vs phone. I am not sure about an ipad since I don’t have one.

The ACA exchange is health insurance for people under 65 and their families. This site is very straight forward. Follow the pages. You can see quotes based on your zip code and may qualify for federal subsidies toward you premium based on household income. You’ll see when you look.

HAVE YOU BEEN HEARING ABOUT MILLIONS OF PEOPLE LOSING THEIR MEDICAID HEALTH INSURANCE??? In a nutshell this is what is happening ...

When the public health emergency (PHE} was declared at the start of the COVID 19 pandemic Medicaid agencies did not disenroll people even if eligibility had changed. PHE is ending and as a result millions of people nationwide will lose their Medicaid coverage because of eligibility requirements resuming. If you currently have Medicaid you will be notified by mail if you meet income requirements or not. Sometimes more information is required. Usually the change will occur on your anniversary date with notification one month prior.

It is very important to verify that your contact information is current. Arizona residents go to www.healthearizonaplus.gov or call (855)432-7587 Monday through Friday 7:00 am-6:00 pm.

What to do now if no longer eligible for Medicaid benefits?

Be proactive. Go to www.reneemedicare.com or www.reneeunder65.com and look at new health plans in your zip code should you lose Medicaid (Arizona residents only). Also, there is self enrollment options. I highly recommend having a conversation before you enroll yourself although it is not required.

If you are under 65 the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace www.reneeunder65.com is your next option. You have 60 days before loss of coverage and 60 days after loss of coverage to select a new plan on the exchange and you may qualify for Federal premium subsidies. Of course you can purchase health plans outside of the exchange which you can do anytime.

In the Medicare world you have options as well. Visit www.reneemedicare.com to look at new plans. Your chance to change lasts for 3 full months from either the date you’re no longer eligible or notified, whichever is later.

Your window to change is crucial. If you miss it then your next chance to find different health insurance is open enrollment towards the end of the year for both Medicare and the ACA exchange.

Feel free to contact me with questions or if you just want to talk about this change. I am here to help. (480)295.6779 call/text or email [email protected].
