We're monitoring the Prescription Drug subsidies and changes for 2027. As of now, it looks like there will be a slight increase to premiums and annual out of pocket maximum. We will continue to update as they announce.

Ask most people what Medicare covers and they'll say “everything.” Then the first bill shows up.

Here's what Original Medicare does NOT pay for:

❌ Long-term care — the biggest gap, and the most expensive one. Medicare covers short-term skilled nursing after a hospital stay, not ongoing help with bathing, dressing or eating.

❌ Routine dental, vision and hearing — cleanings, glasses, hearing aids. Hearing aids alone can run several thousand dollars a pair.

❌ Care outside the U.S. — Medicare generally stops at the border. If travel is part of your retirement, this one matters.

❌ The remaining 20% — Part B pays 80% of approved costs. You're responsible for the rest, and there is no annual cap on it.

None of this is a secret. It just rarely gets explained BEFORE someone enrolls.

Knowing the gaps ahead of time is how you plan around them. That's a conversation worth having early.

Part A, Part B, Part C, Part D. Medicare has more letters than a bowl of alphabet soup, and none of them come with instructions.

Here's the short version:

Part A — Hospital. Inpatient stays, skilled nursing after a hospital admission, hospice and some home health. Most people pay no premium for it.

Part B — Medical. Doctor visits, outpatient care, lab work, preventive screenings and durable medical equipment. This one carries a monthly premium.

Part C — Medicare Advantage. A private plan that bundles A and B into one, usually with drug coverage built in. It replaces Original Medicare rather than adding to it.

Part D — Prescription drugs. Sold separately. Skip it without other creditable coverage and you face a penalty that never goes away.

A and B together are what most people call “Original Medicare.” Everything after that is a choice — and the choices are where folks get overwhelmed.
