The 2027-28 FAFSA is expected to open October 1. Families who file early often have access to aid that later filers simply do not, because some state and institutional programs award funds until the money runs out.

Most of what slows people down in October can be handled right now:
• Create your StudentAid.gov account, and have your student create theirs. Verification can take a few days, so this is the one to do first.
• Locate your 2025 federal tax return. That is the year this cycle uses.
• Pull together current balances for savings and investment accounts.
• Check the priority deadlines for each school on your student's list. Those usually matter far more than the federal deadline.

September is College Savings Month, and it tends to arrive with good timing. School just started, tuition bills are fresh in mind, and the next four years suddenly feel closer than they did in June.

Consistency over a long runway does more work than any single large contribution.

A few questions worth asking this month:
• Where is our college money actually sitting right now?
• Is it in an account built for education, or just a savings account we mentally labeled that way?
• What is our target, and what would we need to set aside monthly to get there?

Most kids will graduate high school knowing the Pythagorean theorem but not how a credit card works. Parents can fill the gap with small, real moments this school year: let your teen see (and help compare) the cell phone bill, explain the paycheck deductions on their first job stub, or open a custodial savings account and match what they deposit. Financial literacy isn't a class. It's a habit passed down at the kitchen table.

Here's the part most people don't know: beneficiary designations on retirement accounts and life insurance generally override your will. That means an ex-partner or a parent listed years ago could still be the legal recipient, even if your will says otherwise. After any major life change (marriage, baby, divorce, new job), take ten minutes to check the designations on your 401(k), IRAs, and insurance policies. It's one of the simplest and most overlooked updates in personal finance.

Equity compensation, a growing practice, an inheritance, a first rental property. If that sounds like you, a few things a standard checklist misses: vesting schedules and the tax treatment of RSUs or options, how rental income changes your tax picture, and how an inheritance should be titled to fit your broader plan. Complexity isn't a problem. Unexamined complexity is. Your plan should fit your actual life, not a template.

Blending wealth takes more than good intentions. Areas that benefit from early coordination: how trusts name (or don't name) a new spouse, whether business succession plans need updating, how gifting strategies between family members may be affected, and how estate documents on both sides interact. These conversations are much easier before the wedding than after a disagreement. Coordinating your advisor, attorney, and both families early helps everyone feel confident about what comes next.
