A wonderful event last week at the Meriden Senior Center.

We were glad to bring "Planning for the Next Chapter" to Meriden, sitting down with local families to talk through the realities of caring for aging parents and planning for what comes next. These are not always easy conversations, but they matter, and it means a lot to have them in a room full of people who care.

A big thank you to Sydney Krewson, CDP and the whole team for organizing such a smooth and welcoming morning. Events like this only happen because people behind the scenes put in the work to bring everyone together.

Today is National 529 Day, and it is one of those quiet little holidays that actually means something to us.

Here is why. In almost every planning conversation we have with families, college comes up. And almost every time, the same thing happens. Parents and grandparents know they should be saving, but the 529 plan keeps sliding down the to-do list. It never feels urgent until it suddenly is, usually around the time a kid starts touring campuses.

So consider this a friendly nudge.

A few things worth knowing about 529 plans:
The money grows tax free, and withdrawals for qualified education expenses come out tax free too. If you are a Connecticut resident, you may also be eligible for a state income tax deduction on what you contribute.

And here is the update that has changed a lot of minds lately. Thanks to SECURE 2.0, unused 529 funds can now be rolled into a Roth IRA for the beneficiary, up to a $35,000 lifetime limit. That solves the worry we heard for years, which was always some version of "but what if my child does not go to college." Now that money does not have to sit there unused. It can become a head start on their retirement instead.
The earlier you start, the more time does the heavy lifting. But honestly, starting later still beats not starting at all. We have seen families make real progress in just a few years.

Our client Joyce Enquist sent this in from a recent trip out west, and we had to share it. She's hiking through Bisti/De-Na-Zin, a stretch of badlands in northern New Mexico that looks more like the surface of another planet than anywhere in the United States. Hoodoos, eroded spires, ancient stone formations scattered across the desert floor. The kind of place you have to actively go find.

What we love about photos like this is that they remind us what the work is actually for. The plans we build, the conversations we have, the strategies we adjust over the years. None of that is the destination. It's what makes the destination possible. It's what lets someone clear the calendar, get on a plane, and go stand in front of something they've wanted to see for years.

Matt with his parents, both teachers.

If you ask Matt how he ended up in a career built around helping people plan for what matters most, the answer starts at this dinner table. With two parents who spent their careers showing up for other people's kids, day after day, year after year.

Most of us can name a teacher who changed something for us. The one who saw us before we saw ourselves. The one who pushed when we needed pushing. The one whose voice we still hear when we're trying to figure something out.

For Matt, two of those teachers happen to be his mom and dad.

To every teacher reading this, thank you. For the early mornings and late nights. The lesson plans rewritten on the fly. The patience that has no off switch. The kid who needed extra time, and got it.

That kind of impact doesn't show up in a paycheck. It shows up in the lives you've shaped, in ways that ripple long after the school year ends.

If you are navigating aging parents right now, you are not doing it alone. There are real tools that make it easier, and a lot of them live in a few important documents.

Wills, powers of attorney, advance directives, DNRs, MOLST forms. Each one does something specific. Together they make sure a parent's wishes are followed, even when they cannot speak for themselves.

None of it is pleasant to think about. All of it is much easier to sort out over coffee on a quiet Tuesday than in a hospital hallway on a Saturday night.
