🚨 INDUSTRY WATCH: DIESEL IS CLIMBING 🚨

Diesel is getting expensive — and that freight rate you were quoted isn’t the whole story.

With diesel prices pushing past $6/gallon in some markets, carriers need to be looking beyond just linehaul + FSC before saying yes to a load.

Because a rate can look great… until you start subtracting:

⛽ Fuel
🚛 Deadhead miles
🧼 Tank washouts
🛣️ Tolls
⏱️ Loading/unloading time
📍 Out-of-route miles
🔄 Repositioning to the next load

And in bulk liquid trucking, those extra costs can eat through a “good” rate fast.

A good freight rate is not automatically a profitable freight rate.

🤔 Know your true cost per mile.
🤔 Know what the FSC is based on.
🤔 Know whether it covers loaded miles, all miles, or something else entirely.

❗And don’t be afraid to ask how the fuel surcharge was calculated.

😡 The truck can stay busy all week and still lose money.

If passed, the bill would establish penalties of $25,000 per offense for any motor carrier found to have knowingly employed a driver who is ineligible to operate a commercial motor vehicle under federal law.

The penalty would increase to $100,000 “if such knowing employment or contracting results in serious injury or death.”

The bill would also establish a civil penalty of up to $100,000 per vehicle for each day on which a cabotage violation occurs. The legislation defines cabotage as a foreign motor carrier taking part in domestic point-to-point transportation within the United States.

🚛 Do you know what the dates on your chemical tanker mean?

Those letters and dates tell you which tests and inspections the tank passed—and when they were completed. They are NOT expiration dates.

For example:
📅 09-26 V I K means the tank passed its external visual inspection, internal visual inspection, and leakage test in September 2026.

Here’s how to read the codes:

✅ V — External visual inspection
✅ I — Internal visual inspection
✅ K — Leakage test
✅ P — Pressure test
✅ T — Thickness test
✅ L — Lining inspection

For a typical unlined, insulated stainless steel DOT 407 tanker with an accessible manhole, V, I, and K are generally annual requirements. P is generally required every five years.

That means 09-26 K generally points to the next leakage test being due in September 2027, while 09-26 P generally points to the next pressure test being due in September 2031.

Thickness, lining, heating-system, and upper-coupler requirements depend on the tank’s configuration and service—including whether the product is corrosive to the tank.

Read each date with its code. One current inspection doesn’t mean every test is current.

🚛 The Jersey Girls’ Pre-Trip Challenge — Part 3!

A strong pre-trip goes beyond tires and brakes. Marie and Kiera are checking the tractor chassis—including the fuel tank, battery box, steps, frame, exhaust, air lines and electrical connection.

Every component needs to be properly mounted, connected and secure before the tanker hits the road. If something doesn’t look right, the truck doesn’t move. It really is that simple.
