Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement Plans

Here are some important differences between Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare Supplement plans in regards to the “Annual Enrollment Period”. As you probably know, the Annual Enrollment Period for Medicare Advantage plans and Part D (Rx) plans, is October 15th through December 7th of each year.
Annual Enrollment is for those who have Medicare Advantage plans and want to change or for those who wish to enroll for reasons such as loss of employer coverage and are over 65. The Annual Enrollment Period is NOT for Medicare Supplement plans, also known as Medigap plans. It is important that you know the difference because Medigap plans have their own set of eligibility rules. In addition, both Medicare Advantage and Medigap plans require you to be enrolled in both Part A AND Part B of Medicare.
The Annual Enrollment Period allows anyone 65 years or older to enroll without having to answer medical questions. It also allows those under 65 who are disabled and receiving Social Security Disability benefits to enroll. For those already in a Medicare Advantage plan, it is a good time to review your benefit options as well as your prescription requirements. Medicare Advantage drug formularies may change from year to year and your prescriptions might have changed. Beside the Annual Enrollment Period, there are a number of other time periods that can affect Medicare Advantage plans. Medicare Supplement plans are not subject to the Annual Enrollment period. You can enroll into a Medicare Supplement plan at any time, however there are only a few instances where you do not have to answer medical questions. One of those times is when you turn 65. In addition, you are also eligible to enroll into a Medicare Advantage Plan at your 65th birthday.
Overall, both Medicare Advantage and Medigap plans provide care, but differences do exist. It is important to review both options depending on your needs and wants. Contact a knowledgeable health care broker with questions.
