Distracted Driving Awareness Month

April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month – but awareness is important year-round. Whether it’s answering a text, choosing your favorite music, setting your navigation, drinking coffee, or something else, there are plenty of distractions on the road.

Using a cell phone and other distractions have deadly consequences. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that on a typical day, nine people are killed and hundreds more injured in distracted driving-related crashes. In 2020 alone, distracted driving killed 3,142 people, a 10 percent increase from 2019.

What’s more, the NHTSA says that sending or reading text messages takes a person’s eyes off the road for five seconds, so at 55 miles per hour, that’s like driving the length of an entire football field with your eyes closed!

What can you do? Encourage your policyholders to follow these tips to help ensure safety out on the road.

DRIVERS

• If you need to send a text, pull over in a safe location and park. Stopping for a few extra minutes could save your life.
• Have your passengers act as your “designated texter” and allow them to respond to calls or messages.
• Avoid scrolling through apps and social media while driving. If you have to, put your phone in the trunk, glove box, or back seat while driving.
• Use the “Do Not Disturb” feature that most smartphones have to prevent calls or texts from coming in while you’re driving.

PASSENGERS

• Remind your family, friends, or coworkers that driving should be the only thing they are focused on. No distractions.
• If your driver is texting or is distracted, tell them to stop and focus on the road.

Winter storm watches and advisories have been issued across the Northeast. The snowfall, freezing rain, and increasing winds could lead to power outages and coastal flooding. Check your local weather for details in your area. Here are a few things you can do:
For Your Home
• To prevent frozen pipes, set your thermostat to a warm temperature. If you're leaving town, set it to no lower than 65 degrees.

• Have working flashlights, nonperishable food items and water in case you lose power or the storm keeps you house-bound for more than a day.

• Stay indoors during the storm and follow these tips to avoid snow shoveling-related injuries.

On the Road
• Snow can accumulate quickly, creating slick conditions. If possible, avoid driving during the storm.

• If you must drive, be sure to stock your vehicle's winter roadside emergency kit with all the essentials including snacks, blankets, a windshield de-icer, a spare phone charger and flare lights. Check your oil and antifreeze levels.

• If there's even the slightest threat of snow in the forecast, keep your motorcycle off the road, properly stored and winterized.

Election Day polls are open and local governments, city agencies and police departments across the nation are bracing for the possibility of protesters taking to the streets to demonstrate against election results. Drivers can help avoid potentially dangerous situations by following some important safety and security measures.
•Check news outlets, your dispatch department, and delivery locations (if applicable) for possible protests along your route, and avoid areas where protest activity is occurring. Even a peaceful demonstration can turn into a violent situation fairly quickly.

•Conduct a thorough pre-trip inspection before departing, as required by law, to help eliminate maintenance breakdowns while you’re on the road.

•Double check your route before leaving, as conditions are constantly changing. If you cannot avoid the vicinity of gatherings, protests, or demonstrations, plan for road closures and prepare alternate routes. Travel during daylight hours whenever possible.
