Our Executive Director, Alvertis Brooks Jr., attended the Ascend National Conference in Manhattan, an annual gathering hosted by the UW Foster School of Business that brings together program managers, corporate collaborators, and city partners from across the country.

From sharing best practices and reviewing programs to planning our path forward, it was an incredible opportunity to celebrate collective wins and collaborate with leaders from Seattle, LA, New York, Atlanta, Long Island, and the Twin Cities.

Excited to bring these insights and fresh energy back to our work! 📈🤝

There is something powerful about seeing a community refuse to accept that development has to mean displacement.

During our Executive Director Alvertis Brooks Jr.'s recent visit to Brooklyn, he had the opportunity to visit Brownsville and learn more about the work community leaders are doing to ensure that as investment comes into the neighborhood, the people who have called Brownsville home have an opportunity to own and benefit from that growth.

That message resonated with our Executive Director of Rainier Valley Community Development Fund.

Brownsville’s story has many parallels to communities we serve in Seattle: historically Black communities experiencing increased investment, rising property values and development pressure—while longtime residents and businesses work to maintain ownership and their place in the neighborhood.

One statement from the work in Brownsville particularly stayed with us: You may not be able to stop change, but you can influence how much ownership your community has in that change.

Thank you to everyone who joined us on July 22nd at the RVCDF offices for our latest community listening session!

Deep, meaningful community work starts with listening. We are deeply grateful to sit down with dedicated leaders who bring clear vision and passion to our neighborhood every day.

Thank you to our community partners who were a part of the conversation, including but not limited to: ADEFUA Cultural Education Workshop, Councilmember Lin’s Office, Senator Rebecca Saldana, Seattle Office of Planning and Community Development, Community Passageways, Rainier Beach Action Coalition and others. Together, we discussed key opportunities, challenges, and actionable steps to continue strengthening our community from the inside out.

If you missed this session, we hope to see you at the next one! Follow our page for future dates and ways to get involved.

We had a fantastic time connecting with our community at the 2026 Othello Park International Festival, organized by the Othello Park Alliance

As a proud co-sponsor of this incredible event, our team at RVCDF loved spending the day tabling, meeting local residents, and chatting with business owners. From stunning lion dances and horseback riders to live music and delicious local vendors, the energy throughout the park was unforgettable.

A huge thank you to the organizers, performers, fellow sponsors, and everyone who stopped by our booth to say hello!

If you missed us at the park, you can always learn more about our small business programs and resources by visiting our website.

Last month, our Executive Director, Dr. Alvertis Brooks Jr., connected with fellow senior leaders in Detroit for the Black Leadership Institute (BLI) Executive Fellowship retreat!

Developed by the Institute for Nonprofit Practice, BLI is a transformative 18-month program bringing together Black leaders across the philanthropic, public, and private sectors. By building cultural and financial capital together, this phenomenal group of leaders equipped themselves to create lasting change and dismantle barriers in their respective cities.

We are excited to see the fresh strategies and insights Dr. Brooks has brought back to Seattle!

Our team was thrilled to attend the 2026 OFN Annual Small Business Finance Conference in Austin, TX! Spending the week with nearly 500 attendees from across the country was a powerful reminder of the impact CDFIs have on Main Street America. We dove deep into the future of small business lending and building structures that move capital faster into underinvested markets.

Thank you to the Opportunity Finance Network, the event organizers, and the inspiring presenters for an incredible forum. We’re energized and ready to put these insights into action! 🚀

RVCDF recently joined leaders across Seattle for the first EDI Strategic Planning Collaborative Design Studio! 🤝

Seattle’s Equitable Development Initiative (EDI) plays a vital role in preventing displacement by funding community-owned land and empowering local neighborhood leadership.

Collaborating on this next strategic phase ensures community needs stay at the forefront of Seattle's growth. Thank you to the EDI team and the Seattle Office of Planning and Community Development for facilitating such a powerful day of planning! 💡
