When “paper wealth” becomes real overnight…what comes next?
For many employees, an IPO or sudden liquidity event can feel like both a breakthrough and a turning point. One day, compensation is largely tied up in equity. The next, you’re facing decisions about taxes, concentration risk, timing, and what this new wealth actually means for your life.
I’ve seen three patterns show up consistently in these moments:
1️⃣ Concentration risk sneaks up quickly: Even after a liquidity event, a large portion of wealth often remains tied to one company. What built your wealth isn’t always what preserves it.
2️⃣ Tax decisions are time-sensitive and consequential: Exercise strategies, holding periods, and selling decisions can materially impact after-tax outcomes.
3️⃣ The emotional side is real: There’s pride, loyalty, hesitation, and sometimes pressure, all wrapped into financial decisions that deserve objectivity.
A better starting question: “What role should this wealth play in my life?”
From there, the path gets clearer and what emerges is a plan built around your goals, not just your company.
If you’re navigating one, I’m always happy to be a sounding board.
