Covers are going on around the valley this month.

If you have ever wondered whether your car counts as a classic for insurance, the answer has less to do with the year on the title than people think. What matters more is whether you have another car you actually drive, and where this one sleeps.

A nineteen nineties car in a locked garage can qualify. A sixty eight that somebody commutes in will not.

Two weeks a year the ridges either side of the valley do something people drive to Vermont for.

It is happening right now. The view from half the ordinary streets in Green Ridge is better than it has any business being.

No insurance point here at all. Just go outside this weekend.

Somebody hands you a lease, there is a line about renters insurance, and you want to know if they are allowed to do that.

They are. Pennsylvania does not require it, your landlord can anyway, and those are two different questions that get mixed up constantly.

Usually it can be sorted the same day, often within the hour, which surprises people staring at a move-in date.

The leaves are barely down and we are already thinking about January.

If you do one thing on the house this month, find your main water shutoff and make sure everyone knows where it is. The difference between a wet floor and a wrecked one is usually how long it took somebody to find that valve.

October list, all in one place.

Hoses off the spigots. Chimney swept. Gutters cleared once the leaves are actually down. Smoke detector batteries. Furnace looked at before the first cold night instead of during it.

None of it costs much. Every one of them turns into somebody's claim around here every winter.

Contractors: audit season is opening.

Your comp premium was set in January on estimated payroll. At the end they audit what it actually was. If you had a good year and grew, the difference gets billed.

It is not a penalty. It is the gap between the estimate and reality.

Better to look at that number in October than open the envelope in December.

The best part of this job is the call after something goes wrong.

Somebody's basement took water and they are not sure what happens next. Being the one who knows, and who can say it so the day gets less frightening, is most of the job.

The worst part is the call where somebody finds out what they had was not what they thought they had.

That second call is why we keep telling people to read the renewal.

Wet leaves on a hill are basically ice, and this town is mostly hills.

They hide the road, they pack into your tread, and they turn a corner you have taken a thousand times into a different corner.

Brake before the curve instead of in it. And check your tires this month while the weather is still decent.

Students are settled in and the city has that fall feeling again.

If you drive near campus in the evening, assume people cross wherever they feel like. They do.

One note for parents: when a kid moves from a dorm to an apartment off campus, what covers their stuff changes. Smaller conversation than most people expect.

Honest question: when did you last actually go to Steamtown?

People drive in from three states for it and half of us have not been since a school trip.

Fall is the right time. Crowds thin out after Labor Day and the weather is good for standing around looking at big machinery.
