FREE Potassium Iodide (KI) Tablets Available Aug. 13 for Residents Near Susquehanna Nuclear Plant

LUZERNE COUNTY, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Health will once again provide FREE potassium iodide (KI) tablets to people who live, work, or attend school within 10 miles of the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station as part of the Commonwealth's annual emergency preparedness program.

The distribution will take place Thursday, Aug. 13, from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at three locations serving the Susquehanna nuclear plant emergency planning zone:

Berwick City Hall

Butler Township Community Center (Drums)

Luzerne County Community College – Public Safety Training Institute, Nanticoke

What are KI tablets?

Potassium iodide (KI) helps protect the thyroid gland from radioactive iodine that could be released during a nuclear emergency.

Health officials emphasize that KI does NOT protect against all radiation and should only be taken if directed by emergency officials during an actual radiological incident. Evacuation and following emergency instructions remain the primary safety measures.

Who should pick them up?

The tablets are available at no cost for people who:

Live within 10 miles of the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station

Work within the 10-mile emergency planning zone

Attend school within the zone

Residents may also pick up tablets for family members or neighbors. Schools and businesses can coordinate bulk pickups with local emergency management partners.

If your KI tablets were issued before July 2024, the Department of Health says they are likely expired and should be replaced.

The new tablets being distributed this year are expected to remain effective through 2034. Expired tablets can be discarded in normal household trash but should not be flushed down the toilet.

The annual distribution is a routine emergency preparedness measure conducted by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Officials stress that it does not indicate any known problem or emergency at the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station. The program is held regularly to ensure nearby residents have access to KI in the unlikely event of a radiological emergency.

Pennsylvania Department of Human Services Secretary Dr. Val Arkoosh today announced that eligible households will receive a $100 supplemental payment from the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

PA DHS will issue the $100 supplemental payments for households that both received LIHEAP during the 2025-26 season and include at least one family member who has a disability, is age 60 or older, or is a child under the age of six. Approximately 193,000 households will be automatically issued a supplemental payment to the same utility vendor who received their cash grant during the normal LIHEAP season. Households will receive a notice informing them that they are eligible and will receive the supplement.

“We know that even though winter is over, many Pennsylvanians may still need assistance with utility bills from last season. LIHEAP helps some of the Commonwealth's most vulnerable citizens – children, older Pennsylvanians, people with disabilities, and low-income families – make ends meet and keep their homes safer, and we are pleased to be able to offer this one-time supplemental payment to LIHEAP households,” said Secretary Arkoosh.
