The Missouri Verdict and the Rising Power of Consumer Advocacy

In a recent groundbreaking case, a Missouri court found the National Association of Realtors (NAR) and other major brokerage firms guilty of conspiring to inflate commission fees. While this may have been surprising to some, a closer look at the current wave of consumer advocacy sweeping across various industries shows us that this outcome was not only predictable but perhaps overdue.

A Look at Impacted Industries

Consumer advocacy isn’t new, but its effects have become more potent and widespread in recent years. Whether it’s healthcare, technology, food, or fashion, consumer voices are transforming the way industries operate:

Healthcare

Consumer demands for price transparency in medical procedures and medications have led to legislative changes aimed at making healthcare more affordable and transparent.

Technology and Data Privacy

With increasing concerns about data collection and user privacy, tech companies are being forced to adjust their policies and improve user controls.

Food Industry

Consumers have pushed for organic, non-GMO, and ethically sourced foods, compelling companies to adopt more sustainable and transparent practices.

Automotive

Public calls for environmental responsibility have sped up the development and adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles.

Fashion

Ethical considerations have put the fast fashion industry under scrutiny, leading to the rise of more sustainable and ethical brands.

Financial Services

In banking and lending, consumer groups have been vocal about the need for greater transparency in fees, loan terms, and financial advice.

Energy

Advocacy for renewable energy has led to increased investment in sustainable options and government incentives for their adoption.

Travel and Tourism

Issues like over-tourism have resulted in more sustainable tourism initiatives.

Beauty and Cosmetics

Consumer awareness about harmful ingredients has prompted brands to reformulate their products to be cruelty-free and organic.

Education

The push for equitable access to education has led to a focus on affordable or free online educational resources.

The Writing on the Wall

When we consider the widespread impact of consumer advocacy, the Missouri lawsuit should serve as no surprise. Across industries, consumer voices have become a powerful catalyst for change, challenging traditional practices and pushing for reforms.

Embracing the Winds of Change

In light of all these transformations, it’s crucial for individuals and industries to understand that change is inevitable. As the saying goes, “The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.” As consumers, we hold more power than we often realize, and as industries, it’s time to listen and adapt.

In closing, a quote by John F. Kennedy captures the essence of our times: “Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.”

By acknowledging the power of consumer advocacy and adapting accordingly, industries can position themselves for a more transparent, ethical, and consumer-friendly future.

How to Avoid Becoming a Trigger Lead After a Credit Inquiry

Every day, countless people have their credit checked for a variety of reasons, be it for a mortgage, auto loan, or credit card application. Little do they realize, this seemingly simple action may open the floodgates to unsolicited calls and marketing pitches. Why? The three major credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion—sell your information to loan officers, insurance agents, credit card companies, and many others hungry for your business.

Given the rise in the number of entities buying leads nowadays, it’s no surprise that you’re receiving numerous calls daily. But fret not! There are ways to counteract this intrusive practice. Here are three pivotal steps you can take:

1. Opt Out of Pre-screened Offers: Before anyone checks your credit, sign up on OptOutPrescreen.com. It’s crucial to do this at least five business days before the credit pull. In the past, merely having the loan officer remove your contact information sufficed. Those days are over. Now, preemptive action is necessary.

2. National Do Not Call Registry: Register on DoNotCall.gov. By doing so, you’re placed on a national ‘Do Not Call’ list, theoretically keeping your name off many telemarketing lists.

3. MyFICO - Your Personal Credit Insight Tool: The top recommendation from us at Color My Credit is for you to create an account with MyFICO. It allows you to see the actual credit scores that lenders view without triggering a hard inquiry. Yes, there’s a fee involved, but think of it as an investment to view your real scores without the nuisance of companies incessantly calling. Moreover, when you’re finally ready for a lender’s inquiry, you’ll be prepared for any incoming calls. You can even catch out those attempting to contact you against regulations.

Act Now! If the idea of curbing these unsolicited calls and offers appeals to you, take these actions now. And if you’re unsure about using MyFICO or have any other credit-related queries, don’t hesitate to get in touch. I’m here to help!

The Ultimate Shield –
Freezing Your Credit:
Consider your credit report as your financial home. Just as you’d install a security system in your house to ward off intruders, freezing your credit with all three bureaus is a potent way to protect your financial identity. When your credit is frozen, no one, except you, can access it. The best part? This doesn’t inhibit your ability to work on or review it on platforms like MyFICO.

Your credit is more than just a number; it’s a reflection of your financial well-being. Keep it secure.

Follow Color My Credit for more credit education and empowerment.
