Housing construction slowed in May due to continued builder backlogs, supply chain delays, and rising mortgage rates. Housing starts fell 14.4% month-over-month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.55 million. Building permits fell 7% month-over-month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.70 million. The expectation with higher rates is that more homes will be available on the market, so construction is understandably preparing.
