7 things your insurance agent wishes you knew before something went wrong.
Most people learn these the hard way.
You don't have to.
1. Your home's rebuild cost ≠ its market value.
If your house burned down tomorrow, what would it cost to rebuild it labor, materials, permits? That number is often higher than what Zillow says. Make sure your coverage reflects it.
2. "Full coverage" on your car isn't actually full coverage.
It's a marketing term. It usually means liability + collision + comprehensive. It does not cover a rental car, gap on your loan, or your custom rims. Ask what's actually in your policy.
3. Flood damage is almost never covered by a standard homeowner's policy.
Almost every year, someone finds this out after a storm. Flood insurance is a separate policy. If you're not sure you probably don't have it.
4. Business owners: your homeowner's policy doesn't cover your home-based business.
Equipment, inventory, liability for clients visiting your home none of it. A simple BOP (Business Owner's Policy) fixes this.
5. Life changes should trigger a policy review.
Got married? Had a kid? Bought a rental property? Started a side business? Every one of those is a reason to call your agent. Most people don't.
6. The cheapest policy is rarely the cheapest when you actually file a claim.
Low premium = high deductible, low limits, excluded coverages. You pay one way or another. The question is when.
7. Your agent works for you use them.
Call before a claim. Call before a big purchase. Call before you cancel something to save $40/month. That's what we're here for.
Save this for the next time someone asks you "do I really need insurance?"
And if your agent has never walked you through any of these it might be time to find one who will.
