FYI we got surprised a few weeks ago and don’t want to go through that again…..
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2026 - TRACKING RACHEL: Hurricane Rachel will likely make a big impact on Arizona's weather!
Rachel is a Category 1 hurricane about 775 miles west of the southern tip of Baja California. It has winds of 80 mph with gusts up to 100 mph, and it's moving west-northwest at 7 mph.
Rachel will make a sharp turn to the northeast later this week. It will weaken as it moves over cooler water, dropping to a tropical storm by Thursday. By Sunday morning, the storm's center is forecast to be near the Baja California and Southern California coast with winds near 45 mph. Although some showers may move in Saturday, most of its leftover moisture pushes across the Desert Southwest Sunday into Monday.
This could be a soaker for a lot of the state.
➡️ Phoenix: 0.50" to 1"
➡️ Prescott, Sedona, Payson and the Mogollon Rim: 2" to 3", with isolated spots possibly higher
➡️ Tucson and southeastern Arizona: generally under 0.50"
For perspective, Phoenix averages less than an inch of rain for the entire month of October. We could get that in just a couple of days... if the forecast pans out.
Heavy rain in the high country could lead to flash flooding, especially near burn scars, washes and low-lying areas.
Rachel's moisture teams up with an incoming storm system to bring much cooler air. After highs in the 100s through Friday, the Valley drops into the 80s Sunday and Monday and the upper 70s by Tuesday!
