Your license depends on insurance.

General liability is non-negotiable. Nearly every state requires it. Minimum $1M per occurrence is standard for commercial work. Without it, you can't operate legally.

Workers' comp kicks in the moment you hire. Even one part-time employee triggers this requirement. Fines and stop-work orders await if you skip it. Sole proprietors may have exceptions.

Commercial auto is often overlooked. Personal auto policies exclude business use. States like CA, TX, FL, AZ, CO, OR, and WA have specific minimum limits. Bid requirements often exceed them.

COIs and additional insureds are job requirements. You need a certificate of insurance for every job. Commercial clients often require being added as additional insureds. Without it, no jobsite access.

License bonds and state rules vary. Many states require a license bond ($5K, $25K) for renewal. Florida, California, Texas, and others have specific GL, workers' comp, and bond rules.

Stay compliant, stay in business. One uninsured incident can end your business. Work with a broker, renew on time, and keep COIs updated.

:warning: Your year's profits could vanish in seconds.

One job site accident. $150k+ in legal fees. Game over.

Insurance isn't just a line item. It's what keeps your business alive.

Here are the 7 coverages every electrical contractor needs:

1. General Liability: your first shield against lawsuits.
2. Workers' Comp: protects your crew (and you).
3. Tools & Equipment: covers theft and damage. Don't let a stolen van shut you down.
4. Commercial Auto: personal auto won't cut it.
5. E&O: covers faulty work claims. More GCs require it.
6. BOP: bundle and save.
7. Umbrella: extra protection for big claims.

Your premium went up with zero claims? Here's why.

Insurers build step increases into renewals. Claim rates climb after year one, so you get a planned bump even with no claims.

Your business grew. Higher revenue, more employees, new trucks all trigger a price reset. Growth is good, but it raises your exposure.

Market hardening means contractor insurance costs more across the board. Industry-wide claims and reinsurance costs are up.

Litigation trends: settlement amounts are soaring. Jury awards and defense costs are higher, so insurers price that in.

Your trade got riskier. Insurers use national loss data. If roofers or HVAC techs saw more claims, your rate moves up too.

What you can do: bundle policies, raise your deductible, document safety training, compare quotes yearly, and work with a broker who knows contractor insurance.

Save this for later. Tag a contractor who needs to see this.
