As temperatures start to warm up across the states, we’ll be doing a mini-series over the next three weeks covering warm weather considerations for your herd.

First and foremost, water quality! The basic water quality properties are biological, physical, and chemical.
🔬Biological: bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and worm eggs
🌡️ Physical: color, turbidity, sediment, temperature, odor, algae (blue-green can produce deadly toxic effects)
🧪Chemical: pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), nitrates/nitrites, phosphates, sodium, sulphates

The USDA NRCS has an insightful article on protecting livestock from harmful algal blooms (HABs) like blue-green algae here: bit.ly/41rrPqh. More information can also be found in the Environmental Stewardship chapter of the BQA National Manual!

Next week: Warming Up Part 2: Handling Considerations.

From herd health to handling practices, BQA principles guide daily decisions and help build trust in the beef industry.

“BQA is kind of like a roadmap to show the public we’re doing things right.”
