Following third molar extractions performed by our insured OMS, staff discovered the dental bur was missing from the surgical handpiece. The OMS immediately instructed the patient to obtain chest and abdominal imaging at a local emergency room to rule out bur aspiration or ingestion.

X-ray imaging identified a metallic foreign body in the upper abdomen. Two days later, the patient returned to the ER with upper abdominal pain. A CT scan determined that the foreign body had progressed to the transverse colon. Read more to learn how this Closed Claim resolved.
