St. Philips Impact Team 703, Highland, WI sponsored a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) night Hearts and Hands fundraiser on March 27th. Impact Team member Sophia Tarrell planned this event for her junior year high school project. The event featured 16 different interactive STEM stations including light circuit operation, program the principal, dash robots, color with data, and more. A crowd-favorite was the banana piano station. A computer was set up to make the sound of a piano key being played when you touched the wire to close the circuit and then touched one of the bananas that were also wired into the circuit. This station taught several STEM skills: understanding circuits (science), understanding cause-effect relationships (mathematics), and computing and digital systems (technology).
Sophia led challenges throughout the night for different age groups. Grades 4K-1: cup towers, build a parachute and save the egg, speedy zipline, boat float off, and paper chain. Grades 2-5: build a balloon-powered car, paper tower, zipline with cargo, make a marble run, and strongest bridge.
While their children were learning STEM skills, parents could purchase raffle tickets and bid on the silent auction items.
The STEM night raised $3,387 for future STEM programs and initiatives for Highland Community Schools.1891 Financial Life matched $1,500.
