Separately managed accounts (SMAs) are reshaping municipal bond investing. SMA muni assets have grown from $100B in 2008 to an estimated $1.2T in 2025, driven by transparency, customization, tax efficiency, and active management. Unlike mutual funds or ETFs, SMAs let investors tailor portfolios to income needs, tax strategies, and impact goals. Cumberland has leveraged SMAs since 1973, using a top-down, total-return approach to help clients navigate interest-rate trends, credit quality, and market cycles.

Cumberland has used separately managed accounts (SMAs) to execute its fixed-income strategies since the company’s inception in 1973, long before SMAs were popularized in the early 2000s.

"We aren't big fans of taxpayer financed stadiums," said John Mousseau, vice chairman and chief investment officer for Cumberland Advisors. "Most of the research out there [shows] they never really end up reaping the economic benefits back to the communities and the teams rake in all the dough. Most stadium and arena bonds trade cheap for that reason."

The city has promised to contribute $625 million to the stadium project. The team, owned by billionaire Shahid Khan, is to come up with $625 million of its own.

The Federal Reserve will certainly be pleased with today’s figures, as it shows slowing inflation and a still growing economy (and solid income gains). But it will wait to make any policy changes until the impact of tariffs is clearer – suggesting that the Fed will keep policy unchanged for a while.
