NABIP Engages Senate Offices on Premium Tax Credits
As Congress moves toward a critical vote on extending the Enhanced Premium Tax Credits—set to expire December 31—NABIP is making sure the realities faced by consumers and the agents who serve them are front and center. Following the agreement to end the recent government shutdown, Senate Majority Leader John Thune committed to a Senate vote on the tax credits, but with no clear 60-vote path for a clean extension, bipartisan negotiations are now accelerating.
That’s why NABIP is meeting with home-state Senate health policy teams to deliver real-time, on-the-ground insight into what losing these enhanced tax credits at the end of 2025 would mean for millions of Americans.
Led by Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Michael Andel and joined by NABIP leaders from across the country, our discussions have focused on:
• Preventing a coverage cliff and abrupt premium spikes for individuals and families.
• Responsible, income-based “off-ramps” that protect consumers while addressing negotiating concerns.
• Stronger safeguards to reduce waste, fraud, and abuse which are essential to any bipartisan solution.
Recent Senate office engagements include:
• Senator Dan Sullivan (R-AK) — NABIP leaders James Smallwood, Albert Fogle, and Shayla Teague highlighted Alaska’s unique market exposure and the urgent need for a smooth glide path if credits change.
• Senator Angus S. King, Jr. (I-ME) — Jesse McDonald and Bill Pike emphasized how middle-income Mainers rely on enhanced tax credits and discussed targeted approaches to preserve affordability.
• Senator Ashley Moody (R-FL) — Angie Vitale, Morgan Campbell, and Courtney Peterson underscored Florida’s large individual market risk and explored practical income-based transition options.
Bottom line: NABIP is not waiting for the debate to come to us. We are actively shaping it—bringing frontline expertise directly to policymakers, protecting consumers from disruption, and reinforcing the essential role of agents and brokers in keeping coverage accessible and affordable.
And this is exactly the kind of advocacy that defines NABIP’s Capitol Conference - where grassroots advocacy shapes national policy, and NABIP members connect directly with policymakers to drive smart solutions.
Join us at NABIP’s Capitol Conference in Washington, D.C. this February.
