Five previously unreleased John Prine songs will see the light of day this fall on 'Found Dogs,' an expanded version of the late singer-songwriter’s 1995 album 'Lost Dogs + Mixed Blessings'. Out October 9th on Prine’s Oh Boy Records, 'Found Dogs' will include alternate takes, acoustic solo performances, and the five previously unreleased originals.
To herald the album, Oh Boy Records has shared the first unearthed song, “World Without Love.” Set to Super 8 film footage from an early 1970s Prine family vacation, the song is light and upbeat as John sings about not wanting to live in a world without love. Alongside Prine’s lyrics, Heartbreaker Benmont Tench‘s organ is the star of the track, amplifying the tune’s gospel spirit as Prine calls and responds to himself.
The bucolic scenes from the “World Without Love” music video reflect some of the broader themes on 'Lost Dogs + Mixed Blessings'. Songs “Lake Marie” and “Ain’t Hurtin’ Nobody” took inspiration from Prine’s childhood vacations growing up outside Chicago, taking a macabre turn on album standout “Lake Marie” as they’re juxtaposed with grisly unsolved murders. In the visual accompaniment for “World Without Love,” however, the celluloid memories remain idyllic, as the past retains its grainy, sentimental charm.
Originally previewed in April as a Record Store Day vinyl exclusive, 'Found Dogs' will arrive physically and digitally on October 9th, the day before John Prine would have turned 80. In addition to the album release, the Prine family and Oh Boy will celebrate the late folk icon with 'Souvenirs: 80 Years of John Prine,' a benefit concert at the Chicago Theatre on October 8th. Hosted by John C. Reilly and raising funds for John’s Hello in There Foundation, the evening will feature performances by Nathaniel Rateliff, Margo Price, Steve Earle, Ratboys, Amos Lee, Joy Oladokun, Billy Prine, Valerie June, Alynda Segarra of Hurray for the Riff Raff, and more. 'Souvenirs' is just one night in a weeklong series of events around Chicago in honor of Prine’s birthday, including screenings of the concert film 'How Lucky Can One Man Get,' a panel discussion of Prine’s legacy at the Chicago History Museum, and all-day celebrations at the Old Town School of Folk Music and in John’s hometown of Maywood, IL.
