Sometimes paying a loan early is not the best idea. As a borrower, you may be required to pay a fee called prepayment penalty.

What is a prepayment penalty?

Pre-pay penalties are simply a way for lenders to make more money and to guarantee a minimum yield on the loans they write. The prepayment fee discourages early payoff through a refinance or sale and represents a large loss to the real estate owner if not accounted for when applying for a loan. Always ask for a detailed written explanation of any prepayment fees when applying for a loan or signing loan documents.
