Twenty years in the Navy shaped a big part of my family’s life.

My years in the WAVES and my husband Brian’s service as a Persian Gulf veteran give us many Navy memories to look back on. We’re thinking of the people we served alongside and the experiences that have stayed with us after all these years.

Happy Birthday to the U.S. Navy! Fair winds and following seas to all who have served and those still serving.

I lock my front door every night without thinking twice about it.

Most of us do a pretty good job protecting our homes, vehicles, and other valuables. Online security deserves the same attention.

This month, remember that protecting yourself online is just as important as protecting the things you can see.

It doesn't take much for a scammer to catch someone during a busy day. Some extra attention and a healthy dose of skepticism can save a lot of frustration later.

What I wish I knew at 25, young and in the military.

First, you don’t have to have it all figured out. At 25, I thought I was supposed to have a plan. Turns out, most of us are just figuring it out as we go.

Second, enjoy the people around you. The friends and coworkers you have now may end up being some of the people you still talk about decades later.

And third, take care of yourself. Your future self will appreciate the extra sleep, the occasional day off, and starting to think about your finances a little sooner.

Funny how getting older gives you a whole new appreciation for the things you thought you already knew.

It's been fun following the journey of our traveling First Command cups. What started as a simple idea has become a reminder that new perspectives can be found in familiar places, and that every community has a story worth sharing.
