Thank you to our partners, AMS Financial Solutions Group, for the Salt Mine Tour experience during ! Our agents had a great time touring such a beautiful place!
Here are only a few of the facts we learned!
• Miners used four-legged "gas detectors": Long before modern technology, miners brought canaries underground because the birds are highly sensitive to invisible, lethal methane leaks. If the canary stopped singing, miners knew it was time to evacuate immediately. 💡
• Horses lived and worked deep underground: For centuries, heavy lifting was powered by hundreds of horses that lived entirely in the mine. The very last underground horse, a beloved mare named Baśka, was safely retired to the surface in 2002 after the mine shifted fully to tourism. 🐴
• It features a massive, buoyant brine lake: Deep inside the mine sits a crystal-clear underground lake so densely saturated with salt that it is physically impossible for a human to sink in it—you would float right on the surface just like in the Dead Sea! 🌊
