Celebrated every May, Older Americans Month is led by the Administration for Community Living under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Established in 1963, Older Americans Month is a time to recognize older Americans' contributions, highlight aging trends, and reaffirm commitments to serving older adults in our communities.

This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” focuses on prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as cornerstones of healthy aging. It encourages older adults to take an active role in their health - advocating for themselves, accessing preventive care, and making informed decisions that support independence.

Many factors can influence healthy aging. Some of these, such as genetics, are not within our control, however, research shows there are steps you can take to help manage your health as you age. Even making small changes in your daily life can help you live longer and better. Research supported by the National Institute on Aging and others has identified actions you can take to help manage your health, live as independently as possible, and maintain your quality of life as you age. Stay safe out there if you're out on a hike!~

In California, peak rattlesnake season is from April through October.

But this year, the region is hearing reports of rattlesnake incidents earlier. On Friday, a teen girl was transported to a Ventura County hospital after being bitten by a rattlesnake on a Thousand Oaks trail.

Ventura County Fire Public Information Officer Andrew Dowd told LAist the incident was the second of its kind in Thousand Oaks in about a week. He said warmer-than-usual weather has been bringing the creatures out.

Earlier this month, an Orange County man died after getting bitten by a rattlesnake in February in Costa Mesa.

LAist talked to experts about how to keep yourself safe on the trail.
