When you get insurance, you are only covered UP TO the limits under which you agreed to be insured.

So, if you sign up for the state minimum insurance requirement of $25k in personal injury and $15k in property liability, that means if you cause an accident and medical expenses are $75k and you total a Brand new Tesla costing $60k to replace, you will pay the difference of $50k and $45k respectively.

And that's why you see law firm billboards encouraging you to sue for the difference between what the insurance pays out and what you still owe. If you are liable, your wages will likely be garnished.
