Every few years, someone predicts total consolidation, a handful of massive lenders swallowing everyone else whole. I've heard this prediction more times than I can count, usually from people who've never actually originated a loan.

Here's what actually happens: big companies grow, then they add layers, approval chains, bottlenecks. The very things that were supposed to make them unstoppable end up slowing them down. Nimble beats massive more often than people expect.

I hear the same complaint from loan officers constantly: the market's frozen, nobody's buying, nobody's calling back. Meanwhile some of our best people are growing their business in this exact same market.

The difference isn't hustle. It's that they stopped broadcasting the same rate pitch to everyone and started actually listening. Turbulent markets don't reward louder. They reward smarter.
