Heads-up on Retirement Account Beneficiary Designation

Iโ€™ve seen this happen more than once, and itโ€™s a recipe for unnecessary taxes and family tension: A trust CANNOT be the beneficiary of your 401(k) or IRA. These accounts require individual beneficiariesโ€”people you name directly, not just in your trust.

Even more problematic? Naming one family member as the sole beneficiary with the โ€œunderstandingโ€ theyโ€™ll distribute funds fairly. That creates a tax mess. That person pays tax on the full distribution before sharing itโ€”and you lose the option for others to stretch the distributions over time. It can go sideways quickly.
