You don't need a full audit to get a sense of where you stand. Start here:

1. Your P&L can't tell you which product, service, or project is actually making money.

2. Money like owner draws, reimbursements, or financing payments lands wherever QuickBooks defaults it, not where it belongs.

3. Your sales channel (Shopify, Square, a marketplace) and your books don't quite agree.

4. You've caught yourself double checking numbers in a spreadsheet instead of just trusting the report.

That's not the same thing as being set up right.

QuickBooks doesn't warn you when something's wrong. It will reconcile an account, categorize a transaction, and hand you a clean looking P&L, even if none of it actually reflects how your business really works.

The software isn't the problem. What's underneath it is.

Most owners find this out the hard way, usually when a lender asks a question the reports can't answer, or a new bookkeeper opens the file and goes quiet for a beat too long.

Before you switch bookkeeping providers, it helps to name exactly what wasn't working.

Not as a complaint list. More like a handoff note to yourself.

Were reports late?
Did questions go unanswered?
Did you feel judged when you asked something simple?
Were you still catching mistakes yourself?
Were you paying for support but still carrying the mental load?

Want to find the right bookkeeper? Make sure they understand your business before you hire them.

A bookkeeping relationship can go sideways when everyone assumes the work is straightforward… and then discovers three months later that it definitely isn’t.

Before talking to a potential bookkeeper, write down how money actually moves through your business — how you get paid, how you pay people, what accounts you use, and anything else that makes your operations unique.
