August is National Wellness Month, so here’s a wellness tip that costs you nothing: Use what you’re already paying for.
Most people use their health plan for doctor visits and prescriptions. Meanwhile, there’s a whole list of benefits built into the premium that never gets touched.
Depending on your plan, that can include:
• Telehealth visits, often at a lower cost than an office visit, and available at 10pm when your kid spikes a fever.
• A 24/7 nurse line. Free on most plans. Someone with clinical training tells you whether this is a wait-until-morning situation or a go-now situation.
• Mental health visits. Many plans include a set number of sessions, and telehealth has made access dramatically easier than it was five years ago.
• Preventive care at no cost to you. Annual physicals, screenings, immunizations. Already covered, frequently skipped.
• Wellness and fitness reimbursements. Some plans offer them. Most members have no idea.
• Hearing, vision, and hardware allowances. Common on certain plan types, rarely claimed.
What matters is these benefits vary a lot by plan. Yours may include all of these, some, or none.
This weekend, pull up your plan documents or log into your member portal and look at what’s listed under wellness, extras, or member resources. You may find something you’ve been paying for since January.
Not sure where to look? That’s what we’re here for.
