A new report from Guardian Life (via PR Newswire/Morningstar) highlights a growing challenge: Americans expect to live longer lives, but many don’t feel financially prepared for them.

Only 13% of Americans say they feel exactly on track to save enough for the retirement lifestyle they want, while nearly half say they feel somewhat or very far behind.

The report also found that financial wellness remains the weakest pillar of overall wellbeing, with finances continuing to be a leading source of stress.

At BrightPlan, we see financial wellness as a long-term journey. Building confidence, resilience, and healthy financial habits over time can help employees feel more prepared for whatever the future holds.

A recent article from Spring Health highlights five mental health-related realities employers should be aware of, and employee financial stress is one of them.

According to their 2026 survey:
• 74% of employees say financial stress has impacted their mental health
• 59% say their financial stress has increased over the past five years

The takeaway is clear: supporting employee wellbeing means looking beyond traditional mental health benefits alone.

Employees need support that helps them navigate real financial decisions with clarity and confidence.

As part of Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s important to recognize that financial stress isn’t always about numbers; it’s often about uncertainty.

Employees are worried about the unknown:
- Not knowing if they’re saving enough.
- Not knowing if they’re on track.
- Not knowing what to do next.

That uncertainty can create ongoing stress that impacts employees’ mental wellbeing.

For employers, the opportunity is to provide clarity through guidance that helps employees feel more confident in their financial decisions.
