Happy to be working with FMSD and Catholic Charities on these children's savings programs. CalKIDS Program
At FMSD, we empower students and families to plan for and pursue a path towards higher education. Did you know that about 81% of Franklin-McKinley students have a CalKIDS account with $500 or more? But many don’t know about this, and so far, less than 10% have registered to view the account online.
CalKIDS is a program created by the State of California that provides up to $1,500 in free money for eligible school-aged children to help kickstart their savings for future college and career training expenses. Your child may already have an account established in their name. Enrollment in CalKIDS is automatic and families are not required to contribute. CalKIDS doesn’t consider immigration status.
Families can register with CalKIDS and learn about their children’s savings account and the various opportunities to participate in recognized savings programs that allow them to contribute funds with matching deposits and incentives, such as “Step Up Savings” (with Excite Credit Union) and “College in my Future” (with Excite Foundation).
Claiming your child’s college savings account with CalKIDS is quick and easy! Visit CalKIDS.org to learn more. You can also request guidance at your school about this process! Our district is partnering with Excite Credit Union and Excite Foundation (selected by the State to promote savings programs for low-income students) and Catholic Charities (CORAL program), to inform and support families in the process of registering and learning more about these savings programs.
