Chinese EV maker XPENG has announced that its robotics business has raised more than $900 million in its first external funding round, giving the unit a valuation of over $6.3 billion.

The round was led by IDG Capital, with major strategic backing from Tencent and Alibaba Group. Gaorong Ventures also participated, according to XPENG and Reuters.

The capital will be used to advance robotics hardware and software, train and refine Physical AI models, collect high-quality data, build mass-production facilities, and support global expansion.

XPENG Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng He, who announced in June that he would personally lead the robotics business, is pushing the company beyond electric vehicles and deeper into embodied AI. The company is targeting production of 1,000 IRON Humanoid Robots per month by the end of 2026, with initial deployments planned for retail stores and industrial campuses. Broader commercial sales in China and overseas are targeted for 2027.

$900M+ raised. $6.3B+ valuation. And one of China’s biggest bets yet on humanoid robotics and Physical AI. 🤖

Asia isn't "catching up" anymore.

58% of the world's billionaires already call Asia home.

Most people will look at this chart and see New York.

I see Shenzhen, Shanghai, and Beijing.

Three Chinese cities sitting directly behind New York in the global billionaire rankings.

Think about that for a moment. For decades, the narrative was that wealth, innovation, and entrepreneurship flowed from West to East. Asia was where products were made. The real value creation happened somewhere else.

Yet today, China alone has eight cities on this list. Asia accounts for 58% of all the billionaires represented. Fifty-eight percent.

At what point do we stop calling that "emerging"?

I've spent more than 25 years living and working across Asia. One thing I've learned is that the world's perception of Asia tends to lag reality by about a decade.

People still talk about China as a low-cost manufacturing base.

Meanwhile, Shenzhen has 132 billionaires. People still view Asia as a region catching up. Meanwhile, Mumbai, Singapore, Taipei, Seoul, Jakarta, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Beijing are producing enormous amounts of wealth.

You don't have to like China. You don't have to invest in Asia.

But if you still think the center of gravity is where it was 20 years ago, you're probably looking in the wrong direction.
