"Call it Boglehead 2.0."

Frec was featured in a Bloomberg piece on the rise of tax-aware index investing, and how it's reshaping the way everyday investors think about returns.

For decades, the conversation was about fees. Now it's taxes. Not avoidance — deferral. Think of it as an interest-free loan from the IRS that, in some cases, never has to be paid back.

Over $100B has already moved into these strategies and Frec is making sure everyone can access them, not just hedge funds and UHNW investors.

We've added seven new direct indices to Frec, giving you more ways to build a portfolio around your strategy. Here are some highlights:

→ Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100: For investors who want their portfolio working harder through income. Like SCHD, this index tracks 100 U.S. stocks with a strong track record of paying and sustaining high dividends.

→ S&P 500 Momentum Index: Like SPMO, this index tracks S&P 500 stocks that have shown persistence in their relative performance. In other words, stocks that have been recently outperforming their peers.

The full lineup also includes the S&P 100, CRSP US Mid Cap Value, CRSP US Mid Cap Growth, CRSP US Small Cap Value, and CRSP US Small Cap Growth. Available on web now, with mobile coming in a few days. International indices and more long short index options coming soon.

It’s that time of year again.

Waiting on your 1099? Not sure when it’s coming or where to find it once it does? We put together a simple guide that walks through the timing, why documents are released in phases, and why corrections sometimes happen.

We also share everything you can see from your tax center, and how to import your data straight into TurboTax.

A surprising number of experienced investors misunderstand capital losses, including some of our own customers.

To make things easier, we put together a guide that explains how capital losses work, how they can offset capital gains, and other rules you should be aware of as a taxable investor.

Factor tilts help you target specific exposures, but leaning in means taking on more risk.

Long short direct indexing offers a solution: by adding short positions, it balances those bets so you can seek returns beyond the index while keeping risk controlled.

Our latest white paper breaks down how a 140/40 portfolio is constructed and how our optimizer manages factor tilts, beta, and transaction costs. We also demonstrate how this approach generates more tax losses than traditional long-only direct indexing, boosting your potential tax alpha.

ICYMI: Frec got a shoutout on the latest episode of My First Million:

Here’s the case they made for direct indexing:

- Indexing is hot. But what’s better than indexing? Indexing with tax advantages.
- Direct indexing 101: Instead of buying an ETF, you buy the individual stocks in the index. That gives you flexibility like harvesting tax losses by selling the losers, without losing market exposure.
- Shaan Puri moved $250K into Frec to test it out. He harvested $16K–$18K in tax losses. The transition to Frec took seconds.

If direct indexing is too complicated, you can think of it like this:

Most people park extra cash in a high-yield savings account. But if you’re in a high tax bracket, there are other vehicles to consider, like muni bonds and Treasuries, which may offer different tax benefits.

“Is the juice worth the squeeze?”

This question comes up all the time when it comes to direct indexing.

Some argue that it’s too complex, too expensive, and the benefits don’t last.

We disagree.

Yes, managing hundreds of positions, navigating wash sale rules, and closely tracking the benchmark index used to be a heavy lift that was only accessible after paying high minimums and high advisory fees.

This is no longer the case.

Thanks to technology, direct indexing can be handled efficiently and cost-effectively, unlocking real tax advantages and flexibility on day one. Now, self-directed investors can keep more of their returns, defer taxes, and maintain control over their portfolios, without paying 1% fees.

Market outlooks change. Your portfolio should be able to reflect that.

With stocks facing a rough start and the Fed holding steady, many investors are evaluating how to adjust their portfolios for the current environment.

At Frec, we give investors tools to respond, not react. We recently launched two new indices (CRSP US Large Cap Value Index and CRSP US Large Cap Growth Index), plus new capabilities to adjust weight factors at the sector or stock level. Together, they give you control to lean more defensive, take on more risk, or simply align with your outlook.

Index investing just got more personal.

Weight factors are now live on Frec, giving you more control to manage concentration, reflect your macro views, and fine-tune your portfolio. Here’s how:

→ Tilt your sectors.

Adjust sector exposure from 0.25x to 5x to reflect your market outlook without restructuring your entire portfolio.

→ Then scale your stocks.

Increase or reduce individual stock weights, also from 0.25x to 5x, to better align with your investment strategy.

You can edit weight factors when setting up a direct index, or anytime after by clicking Edit on the respective direct index page.

Try weight factors today: https://frec.com/app/overview

Available on web. Mobile coming soon.

“Why hasn’t anyone done this before?”

We get this question a lot—and the truth is, they have. But until recently, it was only available to family offices and customers working with high-fee wealth advisors.

Direct indexing has powered portfolios behind the scenes for decades. Now, thanks to tech, it’s accessible to individual investors without the million-dollar minimums.
